Dr. Abou-Gharbia

Lecture topic: Crossing Over: A Drug Discovery Perspective from Pharma and Academia

Dr. Abou-Gharbia currently is the Director of the Moulder Center for Drug Discovery and Associate Dean of Research of the School of Pharmacy, Temple University. He has spent 26 years as the head of drug discovery at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals Corp., where he led the discovery of nine marketed drugs, which include the anticancer drugs Mylotarg, Torisel, Bosulif and Neratinib, and other drugs for the treatment of osteoporosis (Combriza), depression (Effexor and Pristique), insomnia (Sonata), and bacterial infections (Tygacil). Dr. Abou-Gharbia is the holder of more than 350 drug discovery patents worldwide, he was the recipient of the American Chemical Society’s 2014 Heroes of Chemistry award for his team’s discovery of the antidepressant drug Effexor. Dr. Abou-Gharbia is a highly esteemed and internationally renowned scientist whose many outstanding contributions in pharmaceutical research and innovations has benefited over 25 million patients.
