Joe Henkel was named president and chief executive officer at Kleberg First National Bank in Kingsville, Texas, in 1998. He began his banking career at Kleberg Bank in 1970 while a student at Texas A&I University. After graduation, he continued with Kleberg Bank, becoming a vice president, before moving to the Houston area in 1978 where he served as president & CEO for banks in the Allied and First City bank holding companies. In 1993, he became CEO of an independent bank in El Paso, Texas, and served in that capacity until 1998.

Henkel is a 1971 graduate of Texas A&I, now Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Texas, and of the Southern Methodist University Graduate School of Banking in Dallas. He and his wife, George have three children.

Henkel is actively involved in several civic activities, serving as a director on several boards including the Kingsville Area Industrial Development Foundation (president), Kingsville Area Economic Development Council (past president) and the Kingsville Council of the Navy League. In 2010, he was named chairman of the Texas A&M-Kingsville Foundation and serves as a director for several other foundations: Texas A&M Health Science Center Foundation, Coastal Bend Community Foundation, CHRISTUS Spohn Health System Foundation, H.M. King High School Foundation and is an advisory director for the South Texas Charity Quail Hunt. He is the chairman of the Dean’s Advisory Council for the College of Business at A&M Kingsville, vice chairman of the Dean’s National Council for the Texas A&M Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy and is on the Community Advisory Council for the Celanese Bishop Facility.
