ASPIR2E Pre-Pharmacy Advanced Program

The Texas A&M Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy is excited to announce the ASPIR2E Pre-Pharmacy Advanced Program (PPAP)! ASPIR2E stands for Aggie Student Pharmacists Initiative for Recruitment|Retention and Education. This new program is a result of a grant award from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s Minority Health Research and Education Grant Program. There is no cost to participate. A total of 30 students will be selected to participate in PPAP from our partner schools—Texas A&M University and Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

PPAP Goals

The ultimate goals of PPAP are to: 1) help prepare second-year undergraduate pre-pharmacy students to become competitive pharmacy school applicants and 2) deepen their understanding of what pharmacists do.

 

PPAP Prerequisites

Students must have completed— or must be currently enrolled in— the following courses:

  • General Biology I and II
  • General Chemistry I and II
  • Organic Chemistry I
  • College Algebra or more advanced math course

Criteria for Acceptance Assurance

Students will be assured a seat in the Rangel College of Pharmacy (RCOP) Pharm.D. program for the academic year for which they apply if they:

  • Successfully complete PPAP with a passing grade on all activities in which the PPAP students are required to participate; the passing grade will be announced in the program syllabus; please see the Content section below for the list of activities; note that proof of participation in the three shadowing and/or service learning events will be required
  • Earn a PCAT score comparable to the previous entry year mean
  • Earn a 3.4 overall pre-requisite grade point average
  • Meet all RCOP admission requirements

Free Live Online Kaplan PCAT Prep Course

PPAP students will be provided with a free live online Kaplan PCAT preparation course that includes a self-paced math foundations module. Students will be able to participate from any location that has a reliable Internet connection and will need to use a computer, laptop, or tablet. If using a tablet, a keyboard will be necessary.

Content

There are three parts to PPAP: 1) classroom sessions on eight Fridays, 2) live online Kaplan PCAT preparation course activities on 16 Saturdays, and 3) three shadowing and/or service learning events you participate in between January 18, 2019 and April 6, 2019.

Application Process

Any second-year undergraduate pre-pharmacy student at Texas A&M University or Texas A&M University – Kingsville may apply; 30 students will be selected to participate. To meet the requirements of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s Minority Health Research and Education Grant Program, first priority will be given to underrepresented minority students. If seats remain, they will be filled based on the interest and needs expressed by the applicants. As noted in the application, additional priority may be considered for students who indicate they are pursuing a non-science undergraduate major, have been out of school for a substantial period, are changing professions, are a first-generation college student, or possess an educational background that puts them at a disadvantage. Selection criteria includes a minimum overall GPA of 3.4 and a personal statement with exemplary personal goals and expectations as a future pharmacist.

  1. Students complete and submit the online application and required documents by Friday, December 7, 2018.
  2. The college notifies selected participants by Tuesday, December 11, 2018.
  3. Students accept offer by Friday, December 14, 2018.
