Office of Experiential Education

Dr. Beverly TallutoAbout the Department

The Office of Experiential Education oversees the development implementation and assessment of the experiential program. Experiential education comprises one-third of the pharmacy curriculum and provides in-depth exposure and real-life active participation in a variety of pharmacy settings. Pharmacy preceptors play a central role in experiential education. They serve as mentors and role models and demonstrate high professional standards. Preceptors guide students in the application of knowledge learned in the classroom and evaluate the student's progress.

Goals

  • Develop Advanced Practice Experiences through learning objectives that meet accreditation standards.
  • Promote the mission of the College by identifying new and innovative practice sites throughout South Texas.
  • Introduce students to the profession of pharmacy through the interface of didactic courses, professionalism and experiential activities in the Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences.
  • Incorporate service learning and reflection into the Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences to serve as a portfolio of professional growth for the students.
  • Create innovative learning opportunities using technology and distant learning for students and preceptor development.
  • Implement a web based rotation scheduling and tracking process to manage student, site and preceptor information.
  • Use technology to access student competency, drug related interventions, exposure to population health issues and continued development of skills throughout experiential activities.
  • Involve preceptor participation in every facet of experiential education: planning, development and implementation through advisory boards, regional meetings and newsletters
